Voice-controlled assistants within in the modern world.

With the modern world becoming more and more technology driven more people are turning to using internet enabled devices within their homes also known as (IOT) this has opened the door to having features within the home that were not possible before by using a voice assistants an example this is Alexa and Google Home, these AI systems allow users to ask questions, and when connected to other devices allow the user to control devices within their homes such as lights and thermostats all at the push of a button or in this case the say of a couple words! AI has allowed voice assistants to go from just doing what a user says to be able to respond and give the user constructive feedback based on the context.

““Alexa, write me a 500 word report””

How Successful has AI been?

Voice assistants and AI have been hugely successful as a whole, both in terms of shear implementation and how far it has matured since the beginning of voice controlled assistants with Siri back in 2011, with amazon alone reporting over 100 million sales as of 2019 (Bohn, 2019) currently voice assistants can do what the user asks in the blink of an eye, this has enabled a level of automation and simplicity within the home and daily life that would not of been possible without the use of them.

Moving forward AI has enormous potential to move into every aspect of modern life with the virtual assistants having increasing features and benefits to the everyday user this can be see just in about any home with 38.5% of the US population (Petrock, 2020) using some kind of voice assistant or smart speaker voice integration and this number is only rising. Voice recognition of the users is one key item which will affect the whole overall experience of using a voice assistant and although it has come a long way, there is still improvements that can be made to improve the experience to the end user, one key aspect is the improving on making the AI converse more like a human and less scripted, this will have a massive impact in the future as current voice assistants still are plagued with the “I’m afraid I don’t understand that” generic message when a user is not understood, with more development this can be improved to actually give feedback more like a human would improving the overall experience.

Conclusion

In conclusion AI and voice assistants have come leaps and bounds since the first days allowing users to have “partial” conversations this combined with the market share for voice assistants becoming greater by the day people can expect the most common name to be said to be Alexa in the near future. However, there is still room for improvement moving forward as mentioned as in some respects it’s still a chore to talk to them with having to phrase sentences correctly,
